Seed Saving Project & Localized Vegetable Varieties
Seeds are a small but mighty part of a sustainable food system… No seeds, no food! Community partner Marc Kepler has been saving seed for many years, and we are excited to invite our broader community to enjoy growing some of these localized vegetable varieties, and participate in saving seed from this year’s crop as well!
We recommend purchasing localized varieties in a minimum of six plants, as that is is a common minimum number that must be planted together in order to ensure cross pollination for future generations of seeds and plants.(See https://www.seedsavers.org/site/pdf/Seed%20Saving%20Guide_2017.pdf for more information about plant numbers and spacing guidance.)
Individuals who purchase these seedlings are invited to sign up for an online community exchange to share and learn more throughout the growing season. We invite interested gardeners to note your interest in advance of the plant sale via this Form.
If you have any questions, please contact Marc Kepler directly at mdk@psu.edu and/or the Student Farm at studentfarm@psu.edu.
