My name is Pamela and I am one of the 2025 Student Farm interns. I am originally from Thailand but have been living here for nearly ten years now. I applied for the student farm internship hoping to learn more about sustainable agriculture and implement it into my future plans. I also love learning things through experience and getting my hands dirty, so I decided to go for it! Throughout the internship, I am hoping to sharpen my skills in leadership and local community communication. Leadership is the ability for one to properly lead themselves and a group of people, and is an area I am not very familiar with. Some of the qualities of a good leader would be responsibility, accountability, willingness to listen and learn, as well as stubbornness. Some of these, I am not the best at, but by taking the initiative to lead in some departments, I am hoping to get better at them.

Sustainable agriculture is also an important part of why I chose this internship. To me it is essential to be able to farm better largely due to the fact our soil is being destroyed from overuse and nutrient depletion. We all know that soil is limited in this world, and sooner or later, we will run out of farmable land. Learning about sustainable agriculture will allow me to farm and grow more consciously and help improve the soil condition around me. I feel that everyone should learn about sustainable agriculture and help to improve the soil and environment. However, changes cannot happen overnight, but it can start with me. So far, I have learned about the cultivation of weeds, installation of drip tapes, field preparation, and soil amendments in my training classes. We also got to do many hands-on projects around the farm and see how sustainable techniques are implemented!! One thing that was very surprising is the high tunnel. I have never been in a high tunnel before, and it was surprisingly effective in controlling the temperature (keeping it warmer in the early season). It was way more effective than I thought!!
