Penn State’s class of 2018 is returning to an old tradition of selecting multiple areas of the University to benefit from their support. Nelson went on to announce the three 2018 class gifts: a display of the Alma Mater in the HUB-Robeson Center; an endowment to support the Student Farm; and support for the Textbook and Educational Resources Fund.

“Each of these gifts encompasses Penn State’s values — those being integrity, respect, responsibility, discovery, excellence and community,” Nelson said.

Celebrate the beginning of the fall season with live music, farm-fresh hors d’oeuvres, and meet Paul Shrivastava, the new director of the Sustainability Institute and Penn State’s chief sustainability officer, during the Student Farm’s second annual Harvest Festival.

“This festival is the celebration of hard work, dedication and support from so many people at Penn State,” said Izaiah Bokunewicz, Student Farm co-director.

The Student Farm at Penn State hosted a Summer Solstice Celebration the evening of June 21 welcoming the public to enjoy an evening of music, locally-grown foods, and tours of one-acre, working vegetable farm The Student Farm is a living laboratory for engagement in sustainable food and agricultural systems that strategically links classroom education with experiential education, research and community outreach.

It Takes a Village to Raise a Farm

Although Alyssa Gurkis and Hayly Hoch are both students in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, they didn’t know each other when they embarked on a 10-week food-system internship last summer with Penn State Extension-Allegheny County. Now they’re close friends, roommates, and collaborators on a food-system project of their own.
