DOLORES FILM SCREENING AND PANEL DISCUSSION

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (October 25, 2018) — The Sustainable Food Systems Program and Student Farm Club at Penn State is hosting a film screening and expert panel discussion for the historical documentary Dolores. The screening is October 25, 2018 at 7 p.m. in Thomas Building room 101, located on the Penn State University Park campus.

Dolores is a documentary about Dolores Huerta’s activist movements advocating for gender equality and labor and racial justice, and her co-founding of the first farm workers’ union in America. Following the film, attendees are invited to participate in a facilitated conversation with a panel of experts and leaders on issues of social justice, gender, agriculture, and labor movements. Panelists include Dr. Carolyn Sachs, professor emerita of rural sociology and women’s studies; Dr. Rebecca Tarlau, assistant professor of education and labor and employment relations; and Dr. Karl Zimmerer, professor of geography.

Eujean Oh, Penn State student and member of Student Farm Club, helped organize and facilitate the screening and panel discussion. “As one of the most prominent feminist activists in the 20th century, we want to recognize her work and contribution in the fight for racial and gender change, as well as civil and labor rights,” Oh said. “As a community, we want to reflect on her impact in our world and how she was able to lead a fight regarding issues that are still relevant to this day such as workers’ rights, higher wages, and better working conditions.”

Dolores won three Audience Choice awards and was nominated for Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

The mission of the Sustainable Food Systems Program is to educate people about sustainable food systems, cultivate community, and increase access to local foods on campus and in our community.
