The Penn State Student Farm Initiative will host a free screening of Food Chains on April 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Paterno Library Foster Auditorium on the Penn State University Park campus. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion, which will conclude at 9:00 p.m.

Food Chains is a documentary about a group of Florida farm workers and their battle to defeat the $4 trillion global supermarket industry, revealing the rampant abuse of farm laborers in the United States.

The event was coordinated by the Student Farm Initiative, a coalition of Penn State students, faculty, and staff from multiple disciplines who are working to develop a Food Systems minor and student-centered farm at Penn State that will serve as a nexus for experiential learning about sustainability challenges and solutions in food and agriculture.

“Our goal for the Student Farm Initiative is to enhance dialogue about and engagement with food and agriculture systems,” said student farm design coordinator Leslie Pillen. “Organizing the event is just one way that the students involved in this effort are working together to engage the Penn State community in a conversation about our food system.”

“As part of the SFI I have met other students from across campus, and learned how to turn ideas into a reality through working with many different stakeholders,” said Julian Subick, a senior majoring in plant sciences. Subick is one of almost 200 students from 36 majors who are participating in the Student Farm Initiative.

The screening of Food Chains is co-sponsored by The Rock Ethics Institute, the Penn State Center for Global Workers’ Rights, Schreyer Honors College, and the Sustainability Institute. More information is available on the Student Farm Initiative website.
